The exact benefits will vary depending on the type of cloud service used, but employing cloud services essentially eliminates the need for businesses to purchase and maintain their own computing infrastructure.

There's no need to buy servers, update applications or operating systems, or decommission and dispose of out-of-date hardware or software because it's all taken care of by the supplier. Switching to a cloud provider rather than relying on in-house talents for commodity apps like email can make sense. Cloud services may be able to provide a more secure service than a small business could afford to hire since a company that specialises in running and securing these services is likely to have higher skills and more experienced staff than a small business could afford to hire.

Companies that use cloud services can move faster on projects and try out concepts without having to go through lengthy procurement processes or pay large upfront expenses because they just pay for the resources they use. The concept of corporate agility is frequently emphasised by cloud proponents as a major advantage. The ability to spin up new services without the time and effort required for traditional IT procurement should make it easier to get new applications up and running faster. Furthermore, if a new application proves to be extremely successful, the cloud's elasticity makes it easy to scale it up quickly.

It might make economical sense for a corporation with an application that has large peaks in demand, such as one that is only used at certain times of the week or year, to host it in the cloud rather than have dedicated hardware and software laying idle for much of the time. Moving to a cloud-hosted application for services like email or CRM could relieve internal IT personnel of some of their responsibilities, and if such applications don't provide a significant competitive edge, there will be minimal other impact. Moving to a services model also shifts spending from capital to operational expenditure (opex), which may be beneficial to some businesses.

The ultimate killer application for cloud computing is business continuity.
It's official: supercomputing is a thing of the past (thanks, cloud)
